Different T-shirt printing processes, require different base fabrics. For instance DTG printing, works best on 100% cotton, allowing the ink to bond better with the fabric. But it can also work on certain cotton blends, especially where sweatshirts are concerned that have a 20% polyester mix. Screen printing is also best suited to cotton based fabrics, but does also work on sports fabrics such as wicking polyester jersey.
There are a few types of cotton jersey available for T-shirts, which are as follows; open weave or open end cotton, which is regarded as the standard or regular T-shirt fabric usually used for band merchandise or event T-shirts. This is made from unrefined standard cotton fibre. The other type of cotton, is ringspun, which is much softer because the fibres them selves go through a spinning process that straightens and smooths each fibres before they are woven together, making for a softer, smoother and tighter knitted surface. For an even softer finish, you have ringspun combed cotton, that once the fibres have been spun for softness, they are then combed to remove impurities resulting in a super soft, luxurious finish!
